For actual-day methods, profit accrues daily on the principal: Profit = Principal × Annual Rate × Days ÷ Day-Count Basis, where the basis is 365 (Actual/365) or 360 (Actual/360). Under monthly allocation, the expected total profit for the tenure is spread evenly: Monthly Profit = Total Expected Profit ÷ Number of Months.
Banks and fund providers do not all use the same methodology — day-count conventions, rounding and early-uplift rules vary by institution and product. This tool distinguishes the economic calculation (what the money earns over time) and the accounting accrual (profit attributable to the period up to your reporting date) from the bank's contractual calculation, which is authoritative for actual payouts.
Worked example
Example: RM100,000 placed on 1 Jan at 3.5% p.a., maturing 31 Dec (364 days), reporting date 30 Jun (180 days elapsed), Actual/365. Accrued profit = 100,000 × 3.5% × 180 ÷ 365 ≈ RM1,726.03; expected total profit = 100,000 × 3.5% × 364 ÷ 365 ≈ RM3,490.41.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my bank's figure differ slightly?
Institutions differ in day-count basis, rounding, whether the placement or maturity day counts, and product-specific rules. Treat this tool as an estimate and rely on the bank's certificate and statements for contractual amounts.
Does this handle Islamic deposits?
The arithmetic works the same for a quoted annual profit rate, but a specific Islamic product's profit distribution basis may differ — verify with the bank's product terms.
What about top-ups or early withdrawal?
This version assumes a single placement held to the reporting date, with no top-ups or early uplift. For an FD with a rate uplift, use the FD Uplift Calculator.
Are my figures stored or sent anywhere?
